Transparent Displays are being used in Sci-Fi-Movies for a long time. Manufacturers presented several prototypes at fairs around the the globe. Now, Samsung started mass-production of an All-In-One-Showcase with integrated transparent LCD. [zur Deutschen Version]
The Samsung NL22B Showcase is more than just a transparent Display. It is an All-In-One-System comprising a case with security glass to present products, the transparent LCD, speakers and an integrated PC.
We created a short video for this display. We made it look futuristic to pay tribute to all the Sci-Fi-Movies using transparent Displays. Important for the futuristic style plays the Music.  The track is "Aufregendes" by Jan Kliemann.

The model seen in the video is the wall-mounted version. There is also a stand-alone-version available.
Here are the technical specifications:
  • 22" Displaydiagonale
  • Resolution: 1680x1050 (60 Hz) & 0,282 mm Pixel-pitch (h&v)
  • Brightness: 220 cd/m²
  • Contrast: 500:1
  • Viewing-angle: 160° H/ 140° V
  • Response time (grey-to-grey): 5ms
  • Transparency: 15%
  • integrated PC mit AMD A4-3310M Dual-Core CPU, Win 7, 32 GB SSD, 2 GB RAM
  • integrated speakers, protected glass, metal frame, LED-light
  • optional Touchscreen-capabilities
As you can see in the Video, the brightness in the case defines the brightness of the products when seen through the display. At IFABerlin  the brightness was very good. In theory every kind of lighting can be used for transparent displays, wether it's the sun or simply the available light in the room. For actual use with available light transparency needs to be increased.

This transparent LCD technology is intended for places where additional information for products will be presented. This kind of showcase will certainly be an eye-catcher. If you choose to buy the NL22B, you will also get the Samsung Software MagicInfo Premium, which will help to create content for the display. It also allows you to remote control the integrated PC and change settings.

If you hope people will take pictures of your presented products (and if they are the focus and not the display) notice that there is a moiré-effect present. You can see the colorful stripes in the video.

Though Samsung could not tell us an official price there are several shops which list it at about 3000 € to 3300 € (not yet available).

Sebastian studied Business Education and has a particularly strong interest in Serious Games and Gamification. His love for all things Tech, e.g. PCs, Internet, steadily grew since he played his first computer games, that came on a tape. Looking at things from all possible angles is equally important to him as learning something new every day.

You can try to pigeonhole him - it wouldn't work. There's always something unexpected waiting for you.
